SRINAGAR: Fourth unit of Uri-II Hydroelectric Project with generation capacity of 60 MW has been commissioned on March 1, NHPC said on Monday.
A statement issued by the NHPC Limited, a government of India’s Hydro Power Undertaking said the Uri-II Project have been now declared fully operational with the commissioned of its fourth unit on 12 am, March 1.
“Three Units of 180 MW (3x60MW each) are already under commercial operation. By adding 60 MW to the existing operational units, the project is now generating 240 MW (4x60MW) of power,” the statement said.
According the statement, S Kalgaonkar, Executive Director, NHPC Limited, Region Jammu, under whose leadership the project has been implemented, said that with addition of 240 MW of Power, the total installed capacity of NHPC Power Stations in J&K has gone up to 2009 MW.
Uri-II HE Project is one of the 7 projects in the J&K undertaken by government of India under Prime Minister Reconstruction Plan and assumes significant importance for economic development of J&K State and India as a whole, the statement said.
The Project is located in Uri Tehsil of Baramulla District. The Project has been constructed downstream of Uri-I and will pick up its tail water to make use of the gross head of about 130m available in the course of the river between Uri-I tailrace outlet and a place located about 1.25 km downstream of the confluence of Goalta Nallah and Jhelum River, close to the Line of Control (LoC), the statement said.
“The Project is estimated to generate 1123.76 MU of energy in a 90 percent dependable year. This project is a fine example of attaining a massive engineering feat while facing challenging weather, geological, and other hostile conditions,” reads the statement.
“During construction period, the project also received full co-operation of local administration, the local people and Government of Jammu and Kashmir. NHPC has been playing a crucial role in exploiting the hydro power potential in the state of Jammu and Kashmir,” said Kalgaonkar. Apart from its core responsibility of construction and operation of power projects, NHPC has been doing a lot of social development works under its Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development (CSR and SD) in the field of Education, Health, Peripheral Development, Skill Development, Vocational Training and Environment Sustainability, the statement said. “In addition, extensive CSR activities have been taken up in and around all the Power Stations of J&K. Recently, construction of stadium at Uri with an estimated cost of Rs 3 crore and Bus Stand Uri at a cost of Rs 50 Lakhs has been approved by NHPC for the benefit of local people,” the statement said.
