Palpora residents hold protests over water logging

Srinagar: Irked at government failure to dewater the area, the residents of New Colony, Palapora, which falls under Eidgah constituency of Srinagar, Saturday staged a protest.

Men, women and children carrying black flags, placards and banners assembled at Press Enclave here and staged a protest before police swung into action and detained more than two dozen protestors, eyewitnesses said.

Amid slogans against the MLA concerned, the protestors said that water logging has made their lives miserable and there was threat to their life and property. “Water has seeped into the first floor of many residential houses and there is water logging everywhere. Even elderly people are finding it hard to walk on the road,” the protesters said.

Accusing the ruling National Conference of sleeping over the hardships faced by the people, the protesters said, “It seems that the government is busy enjoying warm comforts in Jammu whereas the people of Kashmir have been left to die in tragic situation like ours.”

They appealed the Divisional Commissioner, Shailendra Kumar and the District Development Commissioner Srinagar Farooq Ahmed Shah to look into the matter.

“All our previous appeals have gone down the drain. Now our hope is pinned at these two officers,” the protesters said.

Meanwhile, residents of Hamdania Colony, Bemina also staged a protest over the ‘persistent problem of water logging.’ The protestors said that a large number of households have abandoned their ground floors and some have even migrated from the Colony. They appealed to the district administration to look into the matter.
