Srinagar: Jama’at-e-Islami (JeI) on Saturday reiterated its claim that the Hyderpora house of its erstwhile leader and Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani actually belongs to it and that the latter is only ‘lifelong custodian’ of the property.

JeI amir Mohammad Abdullah Wani said the recent meeting between senior party members and Hurriyat (G) leaders deliberated in detail over the issue, and further discussion is expected in the coming days. “Geelani sahab has written a letter to JeI, asking that the issue must be resolved in the meet after his return from New Delhi,” Wani was quoted as saying by a local news agency KNS.

Wani said it is the official stand of the JeI that the Hyderpora property belongs to the party while Geelani is only its ‘lifelong custodian’. “After that it is the shoora of JeI that will decide about the future course for this property,” he said.

JeI will try to resolve the issue at the earliest, Wani said. “The document that is in the court of law wherein Syed Ali Geelani has donated the Hyderpora property to a Trust must stand null and void and that it is only Geelani sahib who is the guardian of the property that belongs to JeI,” he said.

The JeI had taken strong exception to Geelani’s move of handing over the property to a 8-member trust comprising some close relatives of the Hurriyat chairman and some members of his Tehreek-e-Hurriyat.
