1-day-old baby abandoned near Makhdoom Sahab’s shrine

SRINAGAR: In a fresh case of baby abandoning, the police on Saturday recovered a newly-born female baby near the shrine of Makhdoom Sahab in old city here.

Police said it recovered the baby from vicinity of the shrine, which is located atop the Koh-i-Maran mountain in the middle of old Srinagar. The baby, said to be just a day old, was later admitted at the Children’s Hospital here while a case has been registered by the police under RPC section 317.

“FIR has been registered to trace her patients,” officials at police station Nowhatta told Kashmir Reader.

The medicos at the Children’s Hospital told Kashmir Reader that the baby was healthy when brought there and that she is being looked after by the hospital staff.

“She is just a new born baby, but in a healthy state. She didn’t have any deformity or sickness. We are looking after her,” insiders at the hospital said.

The baby is roughly the tenth one that was left abandoned apparently by her parents in past around two years. Early last year, first a three-day-old girl was abandoned in a bathroom of the Children’s Hospital, then a three-day-old girl and two newborns were left abandoned at three different places, including the shrine of Makhdoom Sahib.

In a much highlighted case, a baby girl with a cleft-lip was left abandoned at the Children’s Hospital until a childless couple adopted her. A New York-based NGO later sponsored her cosmetic surgery, curing her of the facial deformity.

The repeated incidents of baby abandoning at the Children’s Hospital had, in fact, forced the installation of CCTV cameras in its buildings. And it has apparently put a lid on the disturbing practice.

The abandoned babies are usually adopted by childless couples after completing legal formalities. And in the fresh case also a childless couple is in process of adopting the baby.

“They are presently in the process of completing the formalities. Once they are done with it, they can adopt the baby,” the hospital sources said.
