MGNREGA employees seek regularization, hike in salary

Srinagar: The staff working under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) has demanded the government regularize them.
The staff said that they have been working for last four years and should now be absorbed and regularized in the Rural Development Department.
“We urge government to raise our salary which has remained stagnant for years. The government needs to look into plight of those working at grass root level as Program officers, Technical Assistants Junior engineers, Computer Assistants and Gram Rozgar Sevaks appointed on contract basis,” a group of employees told a local news agency.
They said that their consolidated pay structure was fixed taking into consideration the pay of the government servants prevailing during Vth Pay Commission with no provision for TA or DA.
“During sixth pay commission the salaries of government employees have been increased manifold but the MGNREGA workers did not get any hike,” they said, stating the salary paid to them was not enough to meet the daily expenses and requirements of their families due to high cost index of essentials, standard of living.
Minister for Rural Development and Panchayats, Ali Mohammad Sagar, said that the government’s endeavour is to benefit all employees.
Asked when the employees will get the benefit, the minister replied, “You will come to know then.”
