Baramulla: Seven unidentified militants were killed Monday in a gunfight with Army in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, officials said.
“A patrolling party came under heavy gunfire from a group of heavily armed militants in Dardpora village of Lolab. The Army returned the gunfire, triggering a fierce encounter that continued for several hours. Army’s 28 Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operations Group (SOG) of police also reached the spot and assisted the operation.
“Seven militants were killed in the operation. The encounter is still in progress,” Army’s Srinagar-based spokesman Lt Col NN Joshi said. He said the identity of the slain militants and their outfit was not immediately known.
“A huge cache of arms and other war-like stores have been recovered from the site,” the Army spokesperson said.
Army’s claims could not be verified independently.
