SRINAGAR: The State government had no role in implementing the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS) neither was any NGO/ Private Organisation authorised for carrying it out, government said on Sunday.
While replying to a joint question by Khalid Najib Suhrawardy, Sheikh Ghulam Rasool and Mohammad Muzafar Parray, Minister for Higher Education, Mohammad Akbar Lone, information the legislative Assembly that from 2014 onwards, the state government would be actively involved in the scheme, so that aspiring students get benefits of scheme under PMSSS.
“During the academic year 2013-14, the AICTE has received 5608 applications, but recommended only 1502 eligible students for scholarship based on maximum 5 students from a particular College,” lone said.
He said that on the recommendations made by the Chief Minister to the Prime Minister for clearing scholarship cases of the ineligible students as a onetime relaxation for safeguarding their future, the Inter-Ministerial Committee during its 8th meeting held on 26th November 2013 recommended additional 2245 ineligible candidates for scholarship on the basis of taking into account the relocation proposal as well as financial constraints.
The minister said therefore, 3747 (1502+2245) candidates have been recommended for scholarship during the year 2013-14, subject to the condition that in the next academic year the additional students would be relocated to other institutions within the same University (wherever possible) or other University in the region subject to vacancy in the second year and the student having passed the first year, he said and added that the AICTE will obtain an undertaking from the students regarding their relocation to the other institutes as per their preference or as per the allotment to be made by AICTE, he maintained.
