‘Include Mass Communication under RAMSA’

SRINAGAR: The degree holders in Mass Communication are seeking inclusion of the subject at 10+2 level under New Delhi’s RAMSA scheme.
RAMSA, the scheme for universalisation of secondary education throughout India, was recently extended to Jammu and Kashmir with an aim to provide free and compulsory higher secondary education to all in the age group of 12-16 years. However, the subject of Mass Communication is not included in the list of stream to be considered under this scheme.
Mass Communication graduates, a group of whom visited Kashmir Reader on Thursday, said exclusion of the subject from RAMSA denies the students an opportunity to learn a professional course at the higher secondary education level.
“Many universities in our state offer post and undergraduate degrees in Mass Communication and Journalism subject. But due to unavailability of the subject at 10+2 school level, most students interested in making a career in the subject have to study Science or Arts at school level,” they said.
“If Mass Communication and Journalism subject is introduced at the 10+2 level, many students can benefit from this job-oriented course very early on in their life. It will also provide opportunity to students to study the subject from school level,” they added.
The matter has been brought into the notice of the government already, they said.
“We have approached the Chief Minister’s office and other authorities. We appeal the government to consider our request for inclusion of the subject under RAMSA,” they said.
