Geelani condemns curbs, arrests

Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference(G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani Sunday slammed the government for imposing curbs and arresting “hundreds youth and pro-freedom leaders and activists to thwart peaceful protests on the martyrdom anniversary of Mohammad Afzal Guru.”
In a statement, Geelani said Guru’s hanging had “exposed India’s tall claims of secularism and democracy.”
“The hanging of Guru has become a milestone for the resistance movement of Kashmir and he has become an ideal for the youth of Kashmir,” Geelani said.
Geelani flayed the government for turning entire Kashmir into a prison, saying curfew-like restrictions on the movement of people and “crackdown against freedom lovers has proved that it is only thousands of martyrs like Afzal who represent the real sentiments of Kashmir people.”
