‘Omar owes explanation on FIR delay’

Jammu: Seeking Shabir Khan’s immediate arrest , Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) Friday said Chief Minister Omar Abdullah must explain why the police had shown “reluctance” in lodging FIR against the Health Minister.
Addressing a press conference here, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti said that said that there were “apprehensions that being an influential person Khan could try to pressurize the witnesses and destroy evidence.”
“He should have been taken into custody immediately on registration of an FIR.
Also, the government must come clean on media reports that the police had refused to register an FIR lodged by the victim and that she had been forced to approach the court for order for registration of an FIR,” Mehbooba said.
Mehbooba said Chief Minister owed an explanation about these reports.”
“It seems the government is still trying to shield Shabir Khan by not arresting him,” Mehbooba said and added that the reported delay in the registration of an FIR could be part of an attempted cover-up.
Mehbooba condemning the remarks of a senior congress leader questioning the credibility of the victim and identifying her and said that strong action should be taken against him for the breach of the established norms in the country for not naming or identifying the name of the victim of such cases.
Replying in response to a question Mehbooba said the Chief Minister instead of tweeting the information about resignation of minister should have made a formal announcement before the press and explained the whole sequence of events. “He should also explain the delay in registering of an FIR and the general impression that the government is trying to hush the scam,” she said.
Meanwhile, BJP held demonstration in Jammu and Srinagar to demand arrest of Khan, while the Awami Ittihaad Party (AIP), floated by MLA Abdul Rashid, demanded that Khan be put behind bars as his resignation was not enough.
In a statement, Rashid said the matter should be handed over to some credible agency for investigation. NC Additional General Secretary Mustafa Kamal said, “The case has been registered, so we should wait for the outcome of the case. Law will take its own course. He will be forced to resign as he is a man of high morals.”
