Fire at CAPD office, Rs 3 lakh cash destroyed

Jammu: More than three lakh rupees in cash along with office records were destroyed in a major fire at the Directorate of the Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) department here, prompting authorities to launch a probe into the incident and order suspension of two officials.
Fire broke out the Directorate CAPD’s office at TophSher Khani on the Akhnoor Road around 4 am and engulfed several rooms including one housing over Rs 60 lakh in cash.
“Three lakh rupees were destroyed before the cash could be retrieved from the fire,” Director CAPD(Jammu) G S Chib told Kashmir Reader.
Chib said that he has ordered a departmental enquiry to “ascertain why such a huge much amount was kept at the office and not deposited at the bank.”
“We have also placed two cashiers under suspension till the enquiry panel comprising deputy director CAPD and Chief Accounts Officer submits its report in five days,” he said.
A case has also been registered with the police regarding the matter, he added.
