SRINAGAR: Jammu & Kashmir Police’s Wushuist Khalida Banoo did his department and fans proud after she pocketed a gold medal in 3rd Lusofonia Games, beating her Portuguese opponent Ana Fernandez 2-0 in the summit clash played at Nehru stadium in Panaji, Goa, a statement issued by the department said.
A resident of Frontier village Lolab Kupwara, Khalida plies her trade for J&K Police Central Boxing team.
Khalida had made it to the medal deciding game after overpowering Brazilian player in the semis.
Khalida’s participation in the games was made possible after pouching silver in the 21st Senior National Wushu Championship held in Kolkota in 2013.
She has been winning medals quite regularly for her department, winning Bronze, Silver and Gold in All India Police Games held in year 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively.
The 12-day Lusofonia Games saw participation of over 3000 athletes from twelve different countries: Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea- Bissau, India, China, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe and Sri Lanka.
Athletics, Basketball, Football, Judo, Taekwondo, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Beach Volleyball and Wushu were the games involved in the event.
The Addl. Director General of Police (ADGP) Armed J&K, S.M Sahai and Director SSG HK Lohia, who is also president J&K Wushu Association, have congratulated Khalida for her medal winning performance.
Sahai said that all sorts of help in the shape of infrastructure and training was being provided to the sports personnel so that they excel at the bigger stage.
