Singhpora: Protests against PDD over damaged transformer

Baramulla: Scores of people on Wednesday staged demonstrations against the Power Development Department (PDD) at Singhpora here to protest the department’s alleged indifference over repairing of a transformer that was damaged last month.
Scores of residents of Sheikh Mohalla, Singhpora assembled on the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad highway and staged demonstrations, eyewitnesses said. Chanting slogans, the protesters alleged that the PDD has not repaired the transformer that was damaged due to snowfall around a fortnight ago. The protesters said that due to the alleged indifference of the PDD officials, the people were suffering in the bone-chilling winter.
Angry protesters also placed the damaged transformer in the middle of the highway to seek the attention of the higher officials. The protesters blocked the highway for nearly an hour causing disruption in traffic.
“The transformer was damaged last month. However, the PDD officials have not lifted it for repairs till date. The village is reeling under darkness, while the officials seem least bothered to get it repaired,” Abdul Majeed, a protester told Kashmir Reader.
“We have to close down our shops at 5 pm because of unavailability of electricity,” he added.
As the protests were going on, a police team visited the spot and assured the protesters that their grievance will be taken up with the civil administration. Following assurances from the police, the protesters dispersed peacefully, reports added.
