Sopore: Search op continues on second day, Army paratroopers pressed into service

Baramulla: Army on Saturday pressed into service its elite paratroopers to track down a group of heavily armed militants even as a fresh gunfight erupted in Sopore forests where militants are said to be holed up.
On Saturday morning, Special Operations Group (SOG) of police and Army’s counterinsurgency units of 22, 27, 30 RR resumed search operation, which was launched in Marbel forest area on Friday, officials said.
A vast forest area including Cherhaar, Hardshiva, Yemberzal, Rishipora, Rampur and Rajpur have been sealed off by the forces to prevent the militants from fleeing.
“There was a fresh exchange of fire between the forces and the militants in Hardshiva forests. However no causalities on either side have been reported,” official sources told Kashmir Reader. “Due to darkness, the operation has been suspended. It will be resumed on Sunday morning,” they said.
Superintendent of Police (SP), Sopore, Abdul Qayoom told Kashmir Reader that the joint team is searching for the militants “on every side of the forested area.”
Meanwhile, police said that an Improvised Explosive Device planted by suspected militants was recovered by soldiers of 46 RR in Janbazpora area of this north Kashmir district.
“The IED was found by Army’s road opening party in an orchard along the Baramulla-Kupwara highway on Saturday morning. Later, they diffused it without causing any damage to life or property,” Superintendent of Police (SP) Baramulla, Zubair Ahmad Khan told Kashmir Reader.
