Srinagar: Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Friday said the Indian public had been deliberately kept in dark by successive governments and political leadership about the “ground realities” in Kashmir.
“For decades, they have been fed propaganda about how the Indian army is in Kashmir to protect people. Anybody who dares to speak about the injustices perpetrated by the Indian state and its forces in Kashmir has to face the wrath of extremists,” Mirwaiz told a Friday gathering at Jamia Masjid here.
“Instead of falling prey to the propaganda and lies of their political leaders, people in India should try and ascertain the real situation in Kashmir,” Mirwaiz said.
The Mirwaiz said India needs “visionary leadership willing to take bold steps for resolving the Kashmir dispute.”
Despite the international community’s “growing acknowledgment of Kashmiris’ right to self determination,” New Delhi continued to use “its military might to oppress Kashmiris,” the Mirwaiz said.
Mirwaiz said solution of Kashmir issue was in the best interest of India as huge money spent by the country on its defense could be utilized for improving the life of millions of its downtrodden people by providing them better education and healthcare.
Mirwaiz said the recent statement of India’s external affairs minister that Kashmir was an integral part of India was “contrary to political realities.
“Kashmir is a political issue and it can be only solved through political means and not by intimidation or suppression,” Mirwaiz said.
