Baramulla: Three Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were killed on Tuesday in a gunfight in Magam village of Handwara in Kupwara district.
Official sources said that a joint team of army, SOG and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation (CASO) at Khar Mohalla in police district Handwara on Tuesday morning and carried out door-to-door searches.
During the search operation, militants opened fire on the forces triggering an encounter. Police said three LeT militants were killed. However their identities could not be ascertained till this report went to press.
A police spokesperson said a large number of arms were recovered from the slain militants.
A source said fresh rainfall and snow in the upper reaches forced the militants, who were hiding in the forests, to come down to the residential areas. This has increased the frequency of encounters in north Kashmir where another gunfight broke out in Kupwara’s Zurhama on Tuesday afternoon.
Sources said that a joint team of the army’s 23 Para commandos, 160 TA, SOG cordoned off the forested area in Gujarpati, Zurhama village of Kupwara in the afternoon. The cordon was laid following inputs about the presence of militants in the area. During the searches, a gunfight broke out between forces and militants.
