Shutdown continues in Palhalan over killing of local militant

Baramulla: Palhalan area of Pattan remained shut for the second straight day on Thursday in protest and mourning over the killing of local militant Ashiq Ahmad Bhat. Reports said that all shops and business centers, including tuition centers for children, remained closed, though traffic continued to ply on roads. Reports also said that thousands of people from different areas of Baramulla district visited the home of the slain militant where they offered special prayers for him. Locals have also been offering special prayers at various mosques in the area for the past two days.
On Monday evening, Ashiq Ahmad Bhat son was killed along with an associate in a gunfight with government forces in Handwara area of Kupwara district. Both the militants were buried in their native villages.
Ashiq was said to be the last surviving militant of Palhalan village, the others having already lost their lives.
