Kulgam: Thousands of people participated in multiple rounds of funeral prayers held for slain Hizb-ul-Mujahideen militant Muzammil Manzoor Dar in Badroo village of Yaripora in Kulgam district on Wednesday. Militants also appeared at the funeral and offered gun salutes.
Muzammil was killed in a gunfight with government forces in the forest area of Haalan-Kond in Kulgam district. An army sepoy was also killed during the encounter.
Muzammil, as per police reports, was active since 2015 and was a close associate of slain Hizb commander Dawood of Khodweni.
The body of the slain was handed over to his family late Tuesday night. Soon after, people started to make a beeline to the bereaved family’s home.
The crowd had swelled up to thousands by early morning when the body was taken out to the village ground for funeral prayers.
Candies were showered on the body, which was draped in the Pakistan flag, by women of the village as people took turns to have a last glimpse of Muzammil’s face.
As people kept pouring in, more than five back-to-back funeral prayers were held for Muzammil before he was laid to rest, amid pro-freedom, pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans.
Amid the prayers, three to four armed militants made an appearance at the podium, shouted slogans and fired multiple rounds in honour of their fallen fellow.
Muzammil was laid to rest in the afternoon at his ancestral graveyard in the village.
Mobile internet services remained snapped in Anantnag and Kulgam districts for the second consecutive day. Broadband speed has been slashed as well.
