Shopian: Continuous power breakdown has put Shopian in darkness even as the authorities failed to provide even one hour of undisturbed power supply in the district.
Residents of this south Kashmir’s hilly district are braving the worst power supply ever. Despite different board and university exams are underway involved hundreds of students, the electricity has literally passed away in the district.
Shopkeepers and business class from Shopian allege that the government is showing step-motherly attitude towards the district. “They (government) are supplying power to the states of India and we were looming in darkness. This is not a government but a slap on the name of government,” Javid Ahmad, a shopkeeper from main town said.
Muneeb-ul-Islam, a student of class XII told Kashmir Reader that authorities have failed even in providing one hour power supply to the main town. He wondered as to what would be the scene in far flung village.
Bashir Ahmad, another resident said that on one hand, they were asking people to not to burn the tree leaves and on the other hand the government is unable to provide adequate power supply to the consumers.
A group of shopkeepers and traders told Kashmir Reader that despite paying heavy power bills the electricity has literally vanished for us. “Our business has been worst affected and number of students want to apply for scholarships and online submissions of examination or job forms but we fail to do so as there is no power supply for past ten days.
In the rural areas, the government is not providing electricity supply even for a minute. “Since the past one year, we have seen the worst power management in the area. We are paying heavy power bills but the service is not provided,” Farooq Ahmad, a resident of Pahnoo village said.
Since there is valley wide power crisis, of which government blames the dry spell but district Shopian is the worst victim of power breakdowns.
Executive Engineer, power development department, Shopian, Gulzar Ahmad Kuchay told Kashmir Reader that there was some technical fault in Gagren receiving station due to which there were power breakdowns in the town.
He said that there is also technical fault in some power lines which has disrupted power supply in other districts as well. “The supply will remain same at least for another fifteen days,” he added.
