Ganderbal: High altitude areas of Ganderbal district including the famous tourist resort of Sonamarg experienced the first snowfall of the season leading to the closure of 434-km long Srinagar-Leh highway, officials said on Wednesday.
Traffic on the strategic highway, the only road linking the frontier region of Ladakh with the rest of the state, was temporarily suspended since early morning after the first snow caused slippery conditions on highway.
They said about six to 3 inches of snow had accumulated on the highway at Zojilla Pass, which receives the heaviest snowfall in winter and remains closed for five months each year.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) responsible for the maintenance of the highway has pressed into service machines and men to clear the road.
Talking to Kashmir Reader Niraj Kumar Singh Captain BRO said that the snowfall is still going on at Zojila
“Snow clearance is going on we have issued RED signal beyond km 95 (Ranga mord Zojial),” he said.
If weather permits the highway will be thrown open to traffic again after some hours, he added.
