Holds review meeting at Gulmarg for winter sports
GULMARG: To oversee the preparations for the winter months, Secretary Tourism Sarmad Hafeez on Saturday took a review meeting of ski resort Gulmarg, an official press note read.
Secretary tourism stressed on organising more activities during winter months in Gulmarg.
He said cultural programs and special evening programs should be organised during weekend days and emphasised on the need of having coffee shops at different points at Gulmarg.
According to the press note, clearance of snow in time, smooth operations of ski lifts and snow beating machines, maintenance of slopes, readiness of ski patrolling teams for rescue operations, logistic support for heli-skiing, besides maintenance of ice-skating rinks were discussed during the meeting.
In addition to the snow festival, holding of winter sports activities like ski and snowboarding championships and ice-staking camps were also discussed, the press note read.
Sarmad Hafeez also inspected the renovation of the Maharaja Palace and directed the officers that its past glory should be maintained.
He reviewed the progress of the construction of pony track at the resort besides taking stock of the blacktopping of the Gulmarg road.
The hoteliers apprised the secretary tourism of the issues like permission for the renovation of their properties besides erratic water supply in winter which, they said, were hampering them in providing proper services to tourists, further read the press note.
He assured them that all necessary steps would be taken to address the issues. Director Tourism Kashmir Mahmood A Shah, who was also present n the meeting, said Gulmarg is the main attraction for winter tourism and department was taking all out efforts to keep the place abuzz with different activities.
The meeting was also attended by, MD Cable Car Shamim Wani, CEO Gulmarg Development Authority Hanief Balkhi, Assistant Director Tourism Gulmarg Ilyas Ahmad, SDM Tangmarg Abdul Aziz, Principal Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering Colonel J S Dhillon and various hoteliers.
Secretary tourism along with director tourism Kashmir and other officers also participated in Khyber Awards.
At the award ceremony, secretary tourism appreciated the role of travel agents in bringing tourists to the state and assured them that the department would make every effort to promote J&K as the top tourist destination, the press note added.
