PULWAMA: Two minor cousins were crushed under Srinagar-Banihal train when they were crossing the railway track at Puchal village in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Sunday evening.
The two have been identified as Muntazir Ahmad, 10, son of Nasir Ahmad Shah and Faizan Ahmad, 9, son of Raj Mohammad Shah, both residents of Puchal.
Eyewitnesses told Kashmir Reader that the incident took place at about 4 pm when the mothers of the two boys were busy in making charcoal for Kangris.
Northern Railway Chief Area Manager Kashmir, Hari Mohan told Kashmir Reader that the driver made efforts to avert the tragedy by applying emergency brakes.
“The driver had tried his best,” he said.
As a precautionary measure train services from Budgam to Banihal were suspended after the incident, he said.
Mohan added crossing the railway tracks at points where there is no path/crossing is deemed as trespassing which is illegal.
Meanwhile, people in the area gathered at the railway track and protested against railway authorities. They blamed railway guards for not performing their duty as per norms.
The protesters left the railway track soon after learning that the train service has been suspended between Banihal to Budgam.
