Srinagar: The beard of an Imam in Budgam district was cut off by unknown persons who caught hold of him in the wee hours of Friday morning. Maulvi Ghulam Nabi Ghorsi was on his way to the masjid in Futlipora village of Charar-e-Sharief area to lead the Fajr prayers at dawn, when unknown persons caught hold of him and chopped off his beard, locals said.
Ghorsi fell unconscious and was taken to hospital, they said.
A police official in Charar-e-Sharief confirmed the incident.
Meanwhile, in another braid chopping incident, a 45-year-old woman became the latest victim at Pantha Chowk in south Srinagar.
The incident sparked protests in the area and protesters blocked traffic for some time. They dispersed after police assured that the matter will be thoroughly investigated.
Earlier, the braid of a woman was chopped off at Bashubagh Kanihama area in Budgam district. The victim, according to family members, was coming out from her washroom located outside the house when the miscreant emerged and cut off her braid.
A woman at Azad Basti in Natipora area of Srinagar foiled such an attempt by pushing away her attacker.
At Donow Kulgam in south Kashmir, the braid of a girl was chopped off by unknown persons on Friday afternoon.
At Singhpora Pattan in Baramulla district, a new braid-cutting incident made protesters block the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad road. “The honour and dignity of our sisters and mothers is at stake. This un-Islamic act is the brainchild of agencies to create chaos and confusion among people,” said a protester. He said that the victim girl is an orphan.
Locals alleged that police didn’t come to help but instead fired teargas shells on the protesters.
