Baramulla: The people of Rohama Rafiabad in this district are up in the arms against the department of public health engineering for failing to provide them clean drinking water. Villagers allege that that taps have been running dry in the area for a month, forcing them to fetch water from nearby streams and ponds. The water is not fit for human consumption.
Farooq Ahmad, a villager, said that they approached the officials of PHE department many times, but it appears “they are duff and dumb”.
“In this season, when people of all ages are busy with their orchards and paddy, our women spend hours carrying drinking water from the stream,” he added.
Meanwhile, fruit growers, merchants, drivers, and labours from the Fruit Mandi Sopore also said that they have no portable drinking water. President Fruit Mandi Sopore, Mushtaq Ahmad, said that they approached the concerned department but to no avail.
Executive Engineer PHE Baramulla, Zafar Ahmad Faktoo, said that most of their water sources are running dry because of a prolonged dry season. “People of upper belts are using water for their paddy fields, but we hope they will stop this water in next few days. Water level will increase in all the Nalas after the irrigation ends and we will able to provide water,” he said.
