SRINAGAR: Chairman Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Geelani on Friday said restricting peaceful religious rituals is direct interference in religious matters.
In a statement, Geelani said despite announcements related to Ashura procession, the Shia leaders including Nisar Hussain Rather, Mohammad Yusuf Nadeem, Imtiyaz Haider, Ayaz Ahmed Bhat, Ali Mohammad Rather, Bashir Ahmed Lone, Syed Showkat Madani, Ali Mohammad Najar and hundreds of other activists were arrested and lodged in police stations.
He strongly condemned the arrest of Mohammad Ramzan Khan, the secretary general of People’s Freedom League. “He was arrested by authorities, booked under PSA and shifted to Kot Bhalwal Jail, Jammu,” he said.
Meanwhile, a protest demonstration against NIA was held at Hyderpora Srinagar after Friday prayers, the statement said. Bashir Ahmad Qureshi, Meraj u Din Rabbani and Mudasir Nadvi while addressing the protestors said NIA raids are aimed at creating scare. They termed it a psychological crackdown against the resistance leadership, scholars, students and traders fraternity.
Referring to recent summoning and arrests of university scholar Aala Fazili and trade leader Mohammad Yasin Khan, they said it is “a deliberate attempt to deviate attention of people from proposed tinkering in Muslim majority status of state”.
