The serial chopping of braids of women in various parts of Kashmir raises more questions than it answers. That is, if there have been multiple and serial incidents of this nature and even when a few perpetrators have been caught by people, why have not the reasons for this noxious crime come to light? It may be pertinent to note that victims of braid chopping have been invariably women. These incidents and their very nature has caused alarm, consternation and even scare in Kashmir. Given that fact that no reasons have been proffered for braid chopping, the field and room has been left open for speculation vis a vis motives. It could be that the perpetrators are part of some cult or a superstitious clique which believes in witchcraft or some other insidious dark crafts where braid cutting is employed for nefarious ends in accordance with their beliefs. Or, it could be that there are other dark motives involved. Regardless of motives and reasons of braid cutting, it is an alarming trend that needs to be taken seriously by powers that be. There are many consequences of this crime- both individual and collective. Individually, the victim can get traumatized and also given that hair for women is necessary and of aesthetic value, it can scar victims. Collectively and socially, braid cutting has led to fear among women. Despite many incidents of this nature, no clear cut and a well defined approach has been undertaken to nab the culprits and put an end to this nefarious and noxious saga. There can be no excuses for the lackadaisical approach. If the police is on its toes regarding other matters in Kashmir, why such an insouciant approach towards braid cutting? Obviously, the perpetrators are not acting solo; they appear to be part of a group or a network that has some kind of a goal or an end in mind. It should not be difficult for the police to penetrate and break this group and bring their motives into the public limelight and glare. It is sheer good luck that till now no victim has died or had serious psychological and emotional issues after having been attacked. But, definitely, the issue is now acquiring proportions that demand and warrant immediate and vigorous action. It then becomes incumbent for the powers that be to take not only serious note about the issue but also take robust action to stop this menace now.
