Srinagar: Dr Irfan Qayoom has been elected as President of the Resident Doctors Association (RDA) of Government Medical College Srinagar and its associated hospitals
Dr Qayoom was elected to the post in the annual elections held early this week at SMHS Hospital. The election was held for six posts of RDA to elect the representative body of doctors at SMHS Hospital, GB Pant Hospital, Bone and Joint Hospital, Lal Ded Hospital, and Psychiatry Hospital.
“Nearly 342 resident doctors (Interns, Junior Residents, PG Scholars and Senior Residents) exercised their power to vote and elected the body,” a spokesperson said in a statement. According to him, Dr Irfan Qayoom, Senior Resident in Pediatrics department, has been elected as President while Dr Faizan Younus, PG Dermatology, has been elected as Vice President, and Dr Abid Shaira, PG Pediatrics, as General Secretary.
“Dr Arif Andrabi, PG Dermatology, has been elected as Joint Secretary, Dr Fazle Roub, Senior Resident Psychiatry, as Finance Secretary and Dr Shahnawaz, PG Surgery, as Spokesperson,” he said.
The spokesperson said that Dr Irfan Qayoom received a total of 257 votes and his rival Dr Peerzada Zia-ul-Haq, Senior Resident Radiology, received 84 votes.
“For the post of Vice President, Dr Faizan Younus was elected unopposed,” the statement said.
“Dr Abid Shaira secured 149 votes while Dr Ubaid Rasool and Dr Shahnawaz received 131 and 62 votes, respectively, for the post of General Secretary,” it said.
“For the post of Joint Secretary, Dr Arif Andrabi was elected unopposed while for the post of Finance Secretary Dr Fazle Roub managed 213 votes. Dr Shahnawaz was elected as spokesperson unopposed,” the statement added.
