Srinagar: A paramilitary Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) trooper was killed and another was injured in a firing incident, which sources describe as an episode of fratricide, in Banihal area of Ramban district of Jammu on Wednesday.
According to reports, the firing incident took place at about 7:20 PM Wednesday evening near Navyuga Engineering Base camp, the company entrusted with the task of four-laning of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway.
Sources in the police and health department identified the slain as Head Constable Ram Parvesh and the injured as ASI Sham Singh.
“The injured is being treated at the Sub-District hospital Banihal,” a health official told Kashmir Reader.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ramban Mohan Lal confirmed the incident.
“One man was shot in his head and succumbed while another had a blunt object piercing his head. He is under treatment,” Lal said.
He could not comment on the nature or source of the firing, due to poor mobile phone network while Reader was speaking to him.
Director General of Police (DGP) SP Vaid told Reader that the incident looked like a case of fratricide.
“One of them had a blunt object pierced into his face while the other died of a bullet wound. They were out on patrol when the incident happened. It looks like they might have had a scuffle between them,” Vaid said.
He did not rule out other possibilities.
“The case is being investigated and facts will be ascertained soon,” the DGP said.
