SRINAGAR: Terming the Public Safety Act (PSA) as a draconian law, Chairman Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Geelani on Tuesday said arresting and detaining (people) under this Act is a “sheer violation” of human values.
In a statement, Geelani said under the garb of this provision, the authorities feel free to detain anyone for years on “flimsy charges” and without providing any evidences. “It is ridiculous that even these authorities while surpassing and neglecting their own rules and regulations, dishonour and neglect the judicial rulings and directives,” he said.
Geelani said authorities are adopted “autocratic” approach against detainees and said they take refuge in a formal court order that “accused is released if not wanted in any other case” and hence the detainee is charge-sheeted repeatedly on “fabricated” grounds without taking consideration of provisions of justice and discourse of law. The Hurriyat chairman expressed his deep concern over the “increasing lawlessness” in the state. Citing examples of senior Hurriyat leaders Masarat Asalam Bhat, Aasiya Andrabi, Fehmeda Sofi, Ameer Hamza and hundreds of others, Geelani said they are being repeatedly detained despite their PSAs being quashed by the court of law.
Geelani appealed to international human rights organisations to take cognisance and use their good offices for immediate release of all (Kashmiri) detainees languishing in different jails.
