Bandipora: A local court on Tuesday sentenced a man to five years imprisonment for sodomising a minor 14 years ago.
Chief Judicial Magistrate, Bandipora, Raja Muhammad Tasleem sentenced Mohammad Ramzan Sofi alias ‘Cement’ to simple imprisonment of five years with a fine of Rs 20,000, after finding him guilty of unnatural sex with a minor boy in 2003.
On June 27, 2003, the victim’s father approached the police with a complaint alleging that the accused had manhandled and sodomised his son who had left the house on an errand. The complainant alleged that Cement abducted the minor while he had gone to buy meat from market. He took the minor to his shop, gagged him and committed sodomy. The allegations were confirmed and corroborated by medical reports. The police arrested the accused under FIR 178/2003, section 377 RPC, lodged in Bandipora Police Station.
During the trial, the accused was found guilty and sentenced to five years imprisonment and fined Rs 20,000. Out of the fine, an amount of Rs 18,000 shall be paid to the victim and the rest of the money shall be deposited in the government treasury, the court said.
The accused was immediately taken into custody in open court and was sent to district Jail Baramulla.
During the trial, the victim’s counsel, Prosecuting Officer Adil Rashid, argued that the “accused has committed an anti-social offence as a consequence of which victim has suffered physically, mentally and psychologically”. While pleading for harsh punishment, the PO prayed that the offense has created an alarming situation in society, which must be curbed at all levels.
