Srinagar: Clashes erupted between youth and government forces in Srinagar’s downtown on Friday soon after congregational Friday prayers.
Reports said that scores of youth holding banners tried to march towards Main Chowk, Nowhatta, where forces were deployed in strength.
The banners featured photos of militants – both slain and alive – from the Hizbul Mujahideen, Lashkar-e-Toiba and Zakir Musa’s Ansar Gazwat ul Hind.
“The protestors held banners and marched shoulder to shoulder,” an eyewitness said. “One held a banner which featured a picture of the slain Sajad Gilkar who was killed in an encounter last month.”
Later, youth pelted stones at the government forces, who retaliated by firing tear gas canisters. “The clashes continued for several hours and later spread to the Saraf Kadal area,” said the eyewitness.
