Army vehicle hits cab, kills 2 on Sgr-Jmu highway; driver arrested, vehicle seized, say police

Srinagar: An army vehicle hit a cab on Srinagar-Jammu highway in Banihal on Friday killing two persons on the spot.

Reports said that the army vehicle was driving fast when the incident happened. It was on way to Udhampur from Srinagar.

SHO Banhial police station told the Kashmir Reader that the army vehicle hit a Tavera (JK 19 – 0325) which was on way to Banihal from Ramban.

“Two, including the driver of Tavera, died on the spot while as five other passengers were injured of whom four were rushed to Srinagar for treatment,” he said.

It was a head-on collision between the two vehicles near Chamalwas, he added.

The SHO said that the army vehicle has been seized by the police while as the driver has been arrested.

He identified the deceased as Manjeet Singh (28), son of Jagit Ram, resident of Digdol and Nisar Ahmad (38), a resident of Baderwah. Nisar was a police cop and was currently posted with prisons department.

The injured persons were identified as Mohammad Tariq, s/o Abdullah, resident of Ransu Budgam; Fayaz Ahmad s/o Ghulam Mohammad, r/o Manchar Kupwara; Dilshada Begum w/o Mohammad Ashraf Sheikh, r/o Alinbass Pogal Paristan, Banihal; Irshad Ahmed Najar, s/o Khajar Mohammad Najar, r/o Pulwama and Mukhtar Ahmad, s/o Ab Aziz Khan, r/o Krawa Banihal.

The SHO said that police have registered an FIR number 138/2017 U/S 279/304-A RPC into the incident.
