Baramulla: Former minister in Jammu and Kashmir government and senior PDP leader Sofi Ghulam Mohiudin of Handwara area passed away on Tuesday morning after a brief illness, family sources said. They said Sofi was shifted to SKIMS on Monday for advanced treatment but he breathed his last at the hospital at around 9am Tuesday. Sofi was forest minister in Mufti Mohammad Sayed’s government in 2002. He was also president of the traders’ federation of Handwara for three times.
His last prayers was offered at around 3pm in Handwara at his residence, where thousands of people including former minister Choudhry Mohammad Ramzan, Sharif ud-din Shariq, separatist leader Bilal Gani Lone, and other people participated in his funeral prayers.
Most of the shops in main town Handwara were shut down in respect for the deceased.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti was scheduled to visit Kupwara on Monday, but after the death of her father’s friend she postponed her programme and went to condole the bereaved family. “Afterwards as a leader of the party, he worked tirelessly for strengthening PDP at the grass root level in Handwara and Kupwara”, she said in her condolence message.
