Released after 57-day house detention, Umar back at pulpit of Jamia Masjid

Srinagar: Delivering the Friday sermon after eight weeks at the historic Jamia Masjid of Srinagar, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said that the sentiment of freedom cannot be killed by the Government of India’s (GoI) “permanent solution” to the Kashmir problem, which is “to eliminate all the gun-wielding youth”.
He also said that India was forcing the educated youth of Kashmir to pick up guns.
Released after 57 days of house detention, Mirwaiz came to the Jamia Masjid to deliver the traditional sermon and said that Kashmiris cannot shy away from offering sacrifices to safeguard their basic rights.
Referring to the statement of the Indian Home Minister that his government will find a permanent solution to Kashmir, the Hurriyat Conference (M) chief said, “How will they do it? They want to kill all these (gun-wielding) youth.”
“Is it a solution?” he asked, and replied, “No.”
“Isn’t it a reality that lakhs of people attend the funeral of these youth (militants)? They express the same sentiments for which the slain take up guns,” he said.
Mirwaiz said that if one militant is killed, “another ten youth are ready to tread the same path.”
“Who is forcing them? Who is pushing the students (to the wall)… They are being suppressed and oppressed. No one is allowed to speak.”
Addressing the GoI, he said, “You can kill the youth but can you kill the sentiment which our third generation is expressing? Never. History is witness.”
The Mirwaiz said that people of J&K won’t allow abolishing of the state’s special status. “Kashmiris won’t allow such steps that weaken the position of Kashmir… it will never happen,” he said.
Maintaining that Kashmir was not a territorial dispute between India and Pakistan, he said it was the common Kashmiri who was at the receiving end of the hostilities between the two countries. “Thousands of families have been divided,” he said. “Indo-Pak armies resort to firing on borders and innocent people are being killed. When shall it stop?”
“Our religious, social and political rights have been denied at the behest of power,” he said.
Appealing to the people of India, Mirwaiz said, “Kashmir not a real estate nor a territorial dispute, but a humanitarian issue.”
“Isn’t it the right of Kashmiri people to live a life of peace and respect, like that in other parts of the subcontinent…the world?” he asked.
He said that the time has come to solve the Kashmir issue according to the right to self-determination.
For that, he asserted that India and Pakistan should talk and people of J&K should be made part of the dialogue process. “Only then this issue can be resolved,” he said.

Well if dead militants will give birth to new militants they will meet the same fate as their predecessors. But no matter how many militants are killed, you will still drape yourself in same ornate finery. I must say you look quite handsome. All that worrying about dead militants for a quarter century hasn’t put a single wrinkle on your face.
