Srinagar: A funeral prayer in absentia was held on Thursday at the Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) in Awantipora, for former engineering student turned militant, Irfan Sheikh.
Sources in the university told Kashmir Reader that hundreds of students attended the funeral prayers, following which they held protests within the university campus. “The students raised pro-freedom and pro-Pakistan slogans during the protests, which lasted through the better part of the day,” a student at the university said.
Irfan Sheikh of Maldera-Zainapora area in Shopian district was 22 years old when he was killed in an encounter on August 13 in Awneera village of the district.
Two other militants, including operational commander of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, Yasin Itoo alias Mehmood Ghaznavi, were also killed in the encounter.
Irfan had studied BTech in Food Technology at IUST before he joined Hizb ranks in January 2016.
He belonged to a well-off family of orchardists and was the only son among six sisters.
The IUST students prayed for his eternal peace, they said.
