Several reported injured; police say ‘main focus’ is on keeping protestors at bay
SHOPIAN: A fierce gunfight started Saturday afternoon between militants and government forces in Awneera village of Shopian. Sources in the police said that three militants were believed to be trapped in residential houses in Astan Mohalla of the village. Four to five soldiers have been injured in the ongoing encounter, Director general of police SP Vaid told Kashmir Reader.
A senior official, late in the evening, said one among the injured soldier has succumbed to his injury.
An army officer while talking to the media said that ‘fire came from the residential house’ which was under cordon.
Sources in the village told Kashmir Reader that there was a huge deployment of army, paramilitary and police SOG in and outside the village.
Clashes between local youths and the government troops were taking place on all sides of the village. Local sources said that people from neighbouring villages had assembled near the encounter site and were hurling stones on government forces who were retaliating with tear smoke shells and pellets. They said several protesters were injured by pellets and several were referred to Frisal hospital or private clinics.
The SSP Shopian said they don’t have any information about the number of trapped militants. As per reports 12 persons were injured during the clashes near the encounter site.
Police sources said that “main focus is on keeping protesters at bay.”
