SRINAGAR: A man impersonating as a doctor with army and a scientist with National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has been arrested for extorting money from people, duping gullible villagers and marrying five women within and outside Kashmir and abandoning them subsequently.
The accused, identified as Tahir Ahmad Bukhari, a resident of Waskura Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, was arrested by police from Maharastra.
Police sources said Bukhari used to introduce himself as Dr Syed Ishan Bukhari. He was taken into custody following a complaint by a Handwara man who alleged that Bukhari took away a huge sum of money from him after introcuing himself as an army doctor posted in Orissa.
During investigations, sources said, police have unearthed that Bukhari has married five women, three of them from outside J&K and subsequently abandoned them after robbing off their money and jewelry. He was also in contact with six more girls from as many states and has sent them marriage proposals.
Bukhari possesses two Adhaar cards from as many states, police said adding he was arrested by a special team of Handwara police constituted on the directions of SSP Handwara Ghulam Jeelani and headed by SDPO Handwara Shabir Khan. The police contacted Maharastra police to arrest Bukhari who was later brought to Kashmir by a special team of J&K police. “Further investigations in the case are underway,” police said.
Police said that Ishan has forged neuro-surgery MBBS certificates from popular colleges of Canada, Egypt and London.
On these certificates, he was impersonating as a doctor and even practiced as a doctor at famous AIIMS hospital in Delhi and Rainbow hospital in Pune.
During investigations it has surfaced that Bukhari has not studied beyond Class XII. He managed fake certificates from different medical colleges and began impersonating as army doctor.
According to police, Ishan was treating a cancer patient of Bareily in UP in his ‘clinic’. The patient has died.
The complainant, Manzoor Ahmad, has told police that three months ago Bukhari introduced himself as an army officer belonging to Orissa. During the course of time, the accused would share Hadith (sayings of prophet (SAW)) and highlighted, through text or videos messages, various problems facing Muslims and alleged atrocities committed on them in various parts of India.
“(The accused) then started to contact me and would bring in discussions with regard to Islam and need to uplift Muslim community,” Manzoor said.
One day, Manzoor said, Bukhari called him and offered help in the name of God in recruiting a group of people. “He asked for their documents relevant to job as well as their photographs,” Manzoor said, adding that the applicant collected documents of several persons and provided to him.
After few days, Manzoor said, he received a call from the accused wherein he asked deposition of Rs 15000 from each applicant as “processing charges” and provided account number to deposit the money.
“I collected the amount and subsequently deposited it in the account number provided by the person,” Manzoor said. Thereafter, he disappeared and snapped all connections. “This led me to file a complaint with the police,” Manzoor said.
During investigations police found that Bukhari has married five women and has children. His newest wife has three months old baby. The wives have been traced to Orissa, Maharashtra, Bareilly (UP), Handwara and Srinagar. He is said to have extorted Rs 7 lakh from one of the woman besides gold worth Rs 3 lakhs. He is accused to have taken Rs 4 lakh from a woman from Rajasthan.
Another woman (name withheld), a resident of Utter Pradesh has told police that Bukhari met her through matrimonial site in 2014 and after one year, they got married. The lady said that he introduced himself as army doctor but when she came to know about reality, he began torturing her and threatened to share personal videos on internet if she exposed him.
Fatima Arshi Khan, a girl from UP hailed police Handwara for arresting the criminal and demanded stern action against him.
“I have filed many complaints against him but police in UP or in Delhi never arrested him as he was impersonating as defence doctor”, Fatima said.
“I appeal police Handwara to expose this self-styled NASA scientist and army doctor,” she said.
