Srinagar: An Army Major and a soldier were killed and another were injured in a gunfight between government forces and militants in Zaipora, Matribugh village of Shopian district in south Kashmir on Thursday.
As per reports, the army officer and the soldier were injured in an initial firing by holed up militants. They were airlifted to Srinagar army hospital where they succumbed to their injuries. The deceased have been identified as Major Kamlesh Panday and soldier Tenzin. A police official confirmed the deaths to Kashmir Reader.
One more injured soldier was being treated in the army hospital at Badamibagh. He has been identified as Kripal Singh.
Three militants are believed to be holed up in a building in the area, reports said.
The operation, which is currently underway, began after the forces received intelligence inputs about the presence of the militants in the area.
