Bank employee arrested after girl’s mysterious death in Ratnipora

‘The deceased had accused the employee of trying to molest her’

Anantnag: An employee of the Jammu and Kashmir Bank was arrested in Ratnipora Pulwama after the mysterious death of a 17-year-old girl, who had accused the employee of trying to molest her during a visit to the bank Friday.
Insha Bashir Sofi, a resident of Kharbhatpora area of Ratnipora, had visited the Ratnipora branch of J&K Bank, Friday afternoon where the banking attendant, Aijaz Ahmad, who is also the girl’s neighbor, is posted.
Insha’s family said that she had to collect the receipt of the electricity bill from Aijaz at the Ratnipora branch, and alleged that Aijaz tried to molest her.
“She came back home crying and told us that Aijaz tried to molest her at the branch. She fell unconscious soon after,” the family said.
Insha was rushed to the hospital where she was declared brought dead.
Riyaz Ahmad Sofi, a cousin of Insha said that Aijaz had kicked Insha when she resisted his molestation bid.
Following her death, protests erupted in the area and people came out on the streets demanding immediate arrest of the accused bank employee.
Police arrested Aijaz after recording the statements of family members.
A senior police official told Kashmir Reader that the girl’s body has been sent for postmortem and investigation was being carried out in the case.
“In preliminary questioning the bank employee has told us that he had a collision with the girl inside the bank and she slapped him for that. We are questioning him further,” the official said, adding that an FIR has been lodged into the case.
SSP Pulwama, Mohammad Aslam Choudhary told Kashmir Reader that Insha had also complained to the branch manager.
“She complained to Branch Manager that she was molested by the said employee,” Choudhary said, adding that after half an hour her mother also visited the bank and left after Aijaz was scolded again by the manager.
Choudhary added that in the afternoon the girl had developed “some sort of complications” and was shifted to district hospital where she was declared brought dead.
