Srinagar: Opposition National Conference (NC) on Thursday took out a rally against price rise and the increase in killings in Kashmir.
“The PDP-led government is a failure on all fronts,” NC general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar, who was leading the rally, said. “It is due to the policies of the government that Kashmiris and Kashmir are suffering.”
The NC had prepared a memorandum for submitting to the Governor, but the police stopped them from marching ahead at Ram Munshi Bagh.
“The memorandum contains our charge sheet against the government,” Sagar said. “We maintain that killings, whether of civilians, militants or army personnel, have increased in Kashmir under the current regime. The crackdowns have increased. Every day we have cordon and search operations in Kashmir. It has become the order of the day. This government has pushed Kashmir towards uncertainty.” That apart, he said, the memorandum also mentioned the continuous inflation in daily commodities
“This government does not exist on the ground,” Sagar said. “The government was following a proper plan to crush the economy of Srinagar by imposing restrictions and curfews.”
Later, as NC leaders, workers and activists attempted to move ahead with the rally towards Raj Bhavan, the police swung into action near Ram Munshi Bagh and arrested them. NC provincial youth president Salman Sagar was also among those arrested.
The participants were holding placards and banners and raising anti-government slogans.
