Anantnag: Militants, believed to be three in number, on Wednesday managed to escape from a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) here in Mattan area of Anantnag district.
Anticipating protests, the authorities suspended mobile internet services in Anantnag district. The services were restored in a couple of hours after militants managed to sneak out of the cordoned area.
According to police, Mattan Bala locality of Mattan was cordoned off at about 3:00 PM Wednesday afternoon following specific inputs regarding presence of militants in the area.
“The area was cordoned off and searches were carried out in the area but no contact was established with the militants,” a senior police official from the area told Kashmir Reader, “The operation has been called off as of now,”
Local sources told Kashmir Reader that the government forces during the CASO fired a few random shots, while trying to trigger retaliation from the holed up militants.
The militants, however, did not retaliate and escaped.
There were no protests in the area while the CASO was being carried out.
Sources said that the militants, holed up in the area, belonged to the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT).
