Shopian: Residents of Bonbazar area of Shopian blocked the Shopian-Bijbehara road on Monday to protest the “deplorable” condition of road which connects hundreds of villages with the district headquarter and Anantnag.
“The road is bumpy, dusty and dotted with potholes, the noise of tractors and dust enters into our houses which cause health issues in the area,” a protester said.
The protests brought traffic to a halt, stranding hundreds of vehicles including school buses were strained. “Authorities should have come here but they didn’t and we were suffering due to the negligence of the government,” Zahoor Ahmad, a stranded commuter said.
Protesters demanded macadamizing of torn out stretches of the road and told Kashmir Reader that no one from the authorities bothered to visit the spot.
Executive Engineer, Roads and Buildings, Shopian, Ghulam Muhammad Bhat told Kashmir Reader that before they have to go for widening of the road first, which the residents, he said are resisting.
“Some residential houses come under the road and we have the compensation for those people in DC office but they still doesn’t let us to work. Now we will take help of police and these structures will be demolished,” Bhat said.
