Srinagar: A few members of a family from Alalochai Bagh, Srinagar, staged a protest on Monday, demanding the immediate arrest of three police personnel and another person allegedly involved in the murder of their slain family member, Mohammad Yaseen Sheikh.
The family while carrying placards which read, ‘Humein insaaf chahyiea (We want justice)’, raised slogans, “Qatil ko paesh karo” and “Gundda gardi nahi chalegi”, at the press enclave.
Yaseen, according to the protesters, was the sole bread earner of his family.
The protesters said that Yaseen and three friends had gone to Bazulla to get some money from a local mason on June 24 when the incident took place. “A Barzulla resident, known locally as Rangga, had our memory card. We met and gave him a few bananas to eat,” said a protester who identified himself as Mudasir Ahmad Mir, adding, “He called someone over a phone and asked them to reach near the flood channel.”
Mir said, “Suddenly, three policemen appeared before us and began to search our pockets and demanded money from us. One of us fished out his mobile phone and a Rs 500 note from his pocket and asked them to pardon us, but they did not listen and replied that a high-rank police officer was demanding Rs 2000.”. “They told us that they would not allow us to leave until and unless they had received Rs 20,000 from us. We told them to go to the Sher-Gari police station to resolve the issue there. They were scared to go to the police-station,” Mir said.
He said that when the talks were going on, Yaseen tried to flee. The policemen ran after him and he fell into the flood channel. “The other person held me and did not allow me to save him. He could have been saved had they allowed me to go into the water. When I went in to the flood channel, Yaseen was dead,” said Mir.
The protesters said that they want the police to take immediate action against the culprits, so that justice is delivered.
