ANANTNAG: Three militants of the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) were killed in a ‘chance encounter’ here in Bul-Bul Nowgam area on the outskirts of main town Anantnag late Monday evening.
“In a chance encounter three terrorists killed near Anantnag by joint team of security forces. Their identities are being ascertained. Well done!” Director General (DG) of Police Shesh Paul Vaid took to micro-blogging site Twitter to post the news.
Local sources told Kashmir Reader that firing was heard from an open area in Sheikh Mohalla, Wattergam, near Bul Bul Nowgam.
There were few local reports about how and when the encounter was triggered and how it panned out, given the timing and pace of the encounter.
Firing was reported from the area at about 9:00 PM and by 9:55 PM army and the police had declared that three militants have been killed in the encounter.
A police source told Kashmir Reader that the militants were apparently moving in the area and were intercepted by the government forces in a paddy field.
Officially there has been no confirmation on the identity of the militants.
Police sources maintained that the slain militants have been identified as Showket Lohar, a resident of Arwini area in Bijbehara, and Muzaffar Hajam, a resident of Kokernag and Nasir of Pohru.
“An AK-47, an SLR and a pistol has been recovered from the site of the encounter,” a police source told Kashmir Reader.
The operation was yet to be declared officially over while this report was being filed. Soon after the encounter, protests erupted in Brakpora and adjoining areas.
Government forces have been focusing on targeting militant leaders. Early this month, forces killed LeT commander Bashir Lashkari along with his aide. Before that, LeT commander Junaid Mattoo was killed along with two associates in a gunfight with forces. In May, Hizbul Mujahideen commander Sabzar Bhat was killed in Tral.
