Anantnag: One Amarnath Yatra pilgrim died while as fifteen others were injured after a cooking gas cylinder exploded in a bus carrying Yatris in Vessu area of Qazigund in Anantnag district.
The mishap took place at about 7 PM along the Srinagar-Jammu highway while the bus carrying the pilgrims was on the way to Pahalgam.
According to police reports the gas cylinder exploded in a bus with registration number UP83AT-0909. The slain Yatri has been identified as Ganga Ram, a resident of Ganesh Nagar, Andhra Pradesh.
“There was an explosion in the bus. A cooking gas cylinder exploded. I have been told one of the Yatris has died in the mishap,” Director General (DG) of Police, S P Vaid told Kashmir Reader.
Local sources and eyewitnesses told Kashmir Reader that the bus was moving on the highway when the explosion occurred in the bus.
“We rushed to the rescue of the Yatris,” a local told Kashmir Reader.
As per sources the Yatris were rescued and taken to hospital by the locals before any help from government forces and other agencies arrived on spot.
Two of the injured Yatris were taken to PHC Vessu, six to Anantnag district hospital, and about nine others to Emergency Hospital in Qazigund.
“We received six in total. One of them was brought dead while others are undergoing treatment at our hospital,” Medical Superintendent (MS) of Anantnag district hospital, Dr Majid Mirab told Kashmir Reader.
He said that all the injured were stable.
Meanwhile, the locals accused government forces of blaming them for the explosion.
“After we rescued and rushed to hospital the Yatris the government forces who reached the spot blamed us for the explosion, which was a clear cut case of a gas cylinder blast,” a few locals alleged, while talking to Kashmir Reader.
Sources said that the infuriated locals immediately left the scene of the mishap, which had been by then cordoned off by the government forces.
