Baramulla:A soldier has decamped with his rifle from an army camp in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday night. A lookout notice has been issued to nab him, but it is believed he has joined the militantcy. If true, it would be the Valley’s first case of defection from the army. Earlier, a few policemen had similarly deserted their department for the militancy; among them was Syed Naved, who joined the Hizbul Mujahideen almost two months ago.
The soldier, Zahoor Ahmad Thokar of Pulwama, posted in 173 BN Territorial Army in Gantmulla, went missing from his unit on Wednesday night, fleeing with an AK-47 and three magazines.
A source said Zahoor had joined the Indian army in 2015 and was posted in Gantamulla area of Baramulla along the Srinagar-Muzafarabad highway since his appointment.
General Officer Commanding (GOC), 19 Infantry Division, Baramulla, R P Kalita confirmed that Zahoor was missing since last night. “We are investigating where he is. We called his cellphone, but it is switched off. We are contacting his family,” he said.
