Rasheed protests ‘highhandedness’ in Sarmarg

Police ‘agree to’ his demand

Handwara: Langate legislator Abdul Rasheed Sheikh held a sit-in outside the Zachaldara police station Friday along with residents of Sarmarg and neighbouring villages alleging highhandedness of police in the area.
Rasheed alleged that police has been calling the respectable citizens of Sarmarg to police station repeatedly and harassing them.
“Yesterday and today, a senior government teacher, Muhammad Amin, was called to the police station and harassed repeatedly.”
Earlier on Eid, Army and SOG had ransacked houses, and thrashed youth at Sarmarag in Handwara, he said.
In a statement issued later, Rasheed said that later police and civil officials agreed to four demands he presented to them before calling off the protest.
“The demands include: No person should be named in the FIR. Police will not call any person from the area to the police station. Police will file a report against the Army, for highhandedness on EID day. Within a few days, SP of the area and Army officials will visit Sarmarg and restore the sense of dignity and security among the people.”
