Labourer drowns while cleaning Uri reservoir, people protest

Baramulla: A 20-year-old labourer working at Uri-II power project drowned in the project reservoir on Friday in Salamabad area of Uri.
Adil Ahmad, son of Aurangzaib Khan of Salambad Uri, working with an NHPC contractor for cleaning the power canal and reservoir lost his balance and fell into the reservoir.
Local residents said that his colleagues tried to save him but were unsuccessful. They alleged that the NHPC was employing labourers to manually lift garbage with a bucket tied to a rope, hence risking their lives.
Soon after the accident a large number of people and a police team from Uri headed by SHO Uri Tabraiz Ahmad Khan reached the spot and began efforts to fish out the body.
Local residents and the family of drowned youth staged protest against the NHPC authorities and alleged that the accident happened due to negligence of the contractor and NHPC.
The protestors people broke windowpanes of several NHPC huts in Salambad.
“There is a reservoir of Uri-II power project and to clear the reservoir authorities should use bulldozers, but to save money NHPC officials are employing labourers with a tin bucket through a private contractor. On Friday when labourers were downing tin bucket a poor labourer lost his balance,” a local resident said.
Police assured the protestors that they will investigate the case after fishing out the body.
