Calls for immediate relocation of forces camps from civilian areas
Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference (G) Chairman, Syed Ali Geelani on Thursday denounced the government forces coercion and harassment of people offering prayers in mosques. He alleged that the forces, out of their insensitivity and arrogance, don’t allow people to offer prayers even in the holy month of Ramadhan.
“We won’t tolerate extreme bullying and harassment,” Geelani said in a statement issued in Srinagar on Thursday. “We vehemently condemn this act (which is) devoid of all human and moral justification besides (being) a blatant violation of all the fundamental human rights.”
Geelani said that the actions were tantamount to “interference in our religious matters.”
Expressing concern about setting up of new forces camps in Tral, Geelani said that “it is highly condemnable.” Referring to a protest in Tral against setting up of a forces’ camp, Geelani said “We support their demand for shifting of the forces camp.”
He said that more than one thousand such camps in civilian areas are source of strain for people. Geelani said that the personnel of these camps create needless interference in routine work of adjacent population.
Geelani stressed his demand for immediate shifting of camps located in civilian area. “Establishing camps in civilian areas is against international norms and tantamount to rights violation,” Geelani said.
