Anantnag: Pahalgam development authority (PDA)– the main nodal agency meant for the development of Pahalgam on Wednesday asked the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to remove latrines and erect them on the roadside on the same patch of land.
The instructions were issued a day after Kashmir Reader carried a report on the construction of makeshift latrines by para-military men in Pahalgam on Lidder bank at Buffer zone park near Nunwan, Sources in the PDA said that the demolition squad on the directions of PDA rushed to Buffer zone park and got the latrines that had been erected on the fresh water drain passing through the park removed and shifted towards roadside.
“Since CRPF men camped in the park have been deputed for Amarnath yatra duty we could not demolish the latrines but got them shifted towards roadside. There is least possibility of sewage emptying into Lidder from the location the latrines have been shifted to,” an official of the PDA said.
He, however, said that they have locked all points of the concrete toilet erected by the CRPF on Lidder bank near Mamal bridge last year.
However PDAs action instead of appreciation evoked more criticism from the locals. “It is irony that PDA instead of removing the latrines from the green patch of land shifted them to another location at the same spot. One wonders what kind of wisdom it is,” said a resident Ghulam Nabi.
Another local, Javed Ahmad also questioned the wisdom of PDA officials of shifting the latrines from one location to another at the same scenic spot.
“One wonders what difference the shifting of latrines will make. You erect them in the middle of the park or on the roadside, they will play havoc with the ecology of the area,” Ahmed said.
